Julian Savea fell asleep at the wheel and flipped his car in France, his wife says.

The 28-year-old former All Black played for Toulon in the country's Top 14 rugby tournament, and had just secured a win over Perpignan when the crash happened.

"Tonight Julian fell asleep behind the wheels of his car and flipped his car," Fatima Savea wrote on Instagram on Sunday (local time).

"Thankfully he is safe and sound in bed with me now after being dropped home by the ambulance because silly me had her phone on silent and missed all the calls and texts."

She said her husband has always had a problem with falling asleep at inappropriate moments, and that she was "grateful to God" that he wasn't injured.

"I can't stress to you enough how important it is not to drive while you're tired, Julian was lucky tonight."

Mrs Savea denied her husband, who is eight months sober, had been drinking, and claimed the police had breath tested him at the scene.

He had intended to fly to Dubai on Sunday night after the game for a two-week break from the competition. It's unknown whether those plans have since changed.
