Canadian tennis star Eugenie Bouchard has started her ASB Classic campaign in impressive fashion ousting previous Auckland giant killer Madison Brengle in straight sets.

Brengle, American, upset Serena Williams on centre court three years ago but had no answer to the offensive game of Bouchard.

The 6-3, 6-3 win ensures the 24-year-old safe passage through to the second round and a showdown with either Alison Van Uytvanck or qualifier Bibiane Schoofs.

Earlier former champion Lauren Davis progressed to the final 16 with a comfortable straight-sets win over Lara Arrubarrena, losing just four games in the process.

Other winners on a sunny opening day in Auckland were ASB Classic regular Monica Puig, Victoria Kuzmova and Sara Sorribes.
