Baseball: Auckland Tuatara and Canberra Cavalry split double header at McLeod Park

The Auckland Tuatara and Canberra Cavalry split Saturday's Australian Baseball League double header in extremely difficult conditions at McLeod Park in Auckland.

The home side got a crucial walk-off win in the first game of the day when pinch hitter Kris Richards drilled a ball through the right field fence to plate the winning runner and seal the expansion franchise's third win of the season.

Starter Kyle Glogoski gave up just one run and first in three ABL starts this season to help propel the side to victory but it was reliever Tomohito Sakai that recorded the win.

Lead-off hitter Eric Jenkins proved a persistent threat at the plate and was dynamic on the base paths again. Colorado Rockies infield prospect Taylor Snyder made a couple of nice plays to show his ability after arriving in Auckland during the week.

Gale force winds and constant drizzle plagued play throughout the day and got worse late. It meant the second game was called early after the heaviest downpour of the day.

The Cavalry were 2-1 up at the time and were declared winners with little chance of play resuming Saturday.

The two sides will return to McLeod Park on Sunday with a much better forecast for the final game of the series starting at 3pm.
