Blackcaps vs Sri Lanka: Adapting back to home conditions key for test series

Adjusting back to home conditions will be the priority for the Blackcaps, as they prepare to take on Sri Lanka over two tests, three ODI's and one T20.

And that should see an accent of pace over spin, with fast bowler Neil Wagner added to the attack.

New Zealand are fresh off an away series win over Pakistan for the first time in 49 years, with Williamson praising his team's efforts to hang in there after slow starts to all three tests.

"The highlight was the constant fight the team showed, he says. "To come back with a series victory is incredible."

But the 28-year-old isn’t thinking too much about that success, as he focuses on the Sri Lanka series.

"It’s a quick turnover and it's important we adjust to the conditions at home," he said.

"We want to make adjustments as quickly as possible."

With the focus now on Sri Lanka and the Basin Reserve, the Blackcaps are expecting a familiar Wellington pitch.

"We're expecting a typical Basin surface, where it offers a bit of pace and bounce, and is a good fair cricket wicket.

"There is a role for the spinners, because the bounce this pitch has."

But the skipper has confirmed Wagner will replace second spin bowler Will Somerville in the playing XI for the opening encounter, with Ajaz Patel filling the lone specialist spin role.

Williamson says scoring can come quickly on this wicket, if the bowlers don’t put the ball in the right places, which will be something the seamers will be working on.

"All our seamers are a bit different, but all effective in their own way," Williamson said.

"It's about what mix you want to go with. It's important that you make your adjustments, because how you operate over there [UAE] is different to here."

The Blackcaps are playing in a different opponent, but their mentality will stay the same.

"The conditions change from the UAE, but our mindset doesn’t change - we will be up against some tough opposition in Sri Lanka."

The first test starts at 11am Saturday.
