Blackcaps vs Sri Lanka: NZ claim series win by winning second test in Christchurch

  • 30/12/2018

The Blackcaps have created history by winning the second test against Sri Lanka by 423 runs at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

The win means New Zealand has won four consecutive tests - something they have never achieved before. They beat the West Indies, England and Pakistan in their previous series.

The margin of victory is the greatest for New Zealand in matches not involving an innings result, beating their 254-run win over Zimbabwe in 2016, while it is  Sri Lanka's heaviest defeat not involving an innings result, with the 304-run loss against India last year being their previous worst.

On top of that, the Blackcaps will rise to third in the test rankings with the series win.

Needing just three wickets to win the test, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner took just 12 minutes to claim the match and the series in just 14 balls.

Boult, who took six wickets for four runs in 15 deliveries in the first innings, dismissed Suranga Lakmal (18) on the third ball, before Wagner had Dilruwan Perera (22) caught on the eighth.

The 29-year-old Boult then wrapped up the innings when he had Dushmantha Chameera (three) trapped in front on the 14th to end innings at 236/9, with Angelo Mathews unable to bat.

Sri Lanka started the day on 231/6, needing another 429 runs to win the test.

New Zealand paceman Tim Southee was named man of the match.
