The Blackcaps are staring at an uphill battle after the opening session on day one of the second test against Sri Lanka.
After losing a critical toss and being sent into bat first on a very green Hagley Oval pitch, the hosts limped to just 51/4 at lunch, with all four wickets courtesy of Sri Lanka quick Suranga Lakmal.
Jeet Raval was the first to go with the score at 16, followed one run later by Tom Latham.
Lakmal then snared dangerman Kane Williamson caught behind for only two runs, then sent went straight through the defence of Henry Nicholls to send him packing for a solitary run.
Taylor and Watling will resume after lunch, sitting at 7 and 22 respectively.
