Blackcaps vs Sri Lanka: NZ's hopes of win fade as rain delays Day Five

  • 19/12/2018

The Blackcaps' hopes of clinching victory in the final day of the opening test against Sri Lanka have been scrapped by the Wellington rain.

The inclement weather forecast for the capital allowed just under an hour's play on the final day.

Kusal Mendis and Angelo Matthews, the stars of Day Four, remained at the crease, taking Sri Lanka through to 287/3.

The first wicket-less day of cricket in NZ test history on Tuesday was also the first in all tests in more than a decade.

Mendis and Matthews' stoic 246-run stand halted a Sri Lankan top-order collapse, and combined with Wednesday's weather salvaged an unlikely draw for the tourists.

The second test starts on Boxing Day in Christchurch.
