Starting the penultimate day on 24/2, Sri Lanka added a further 65 runs to their total to sit at 89/2 at lunch with Kusal Mendis (51) and Dinesh Chandimal (33) at the crease.
On day three, the Blackcaps set Sri Lanka 660 to win the test after declaring for 585/4 in their second innings.
In the innings, Colin De Grandhomme set the record for with New Zealand's fastest test 50, raising his bat after 28 balls.
