The Blackcaps have moved to a dominant position at stumps on day two of the second test against Sri Lanka in Christchurch.
Ross Taylor (25) and Tom Latham (74) have seen the hosts through to 231/2 for a commanding lead of 305 to capitalise on Trent Boult's opening session heroics with the ball.
The paceman captured the fastest five wickets in test history (11 balls) in a jaw-dropping spell that reduced Sri Lanka from 94/4 to 104 all out. He finished with career-best figures of 6/30.
In response, New Zealand put on an impressive opening stand of 121 led by Jeet Raval's well-compiled 74.
Latham then took charge, anchoring the innings with his patient innings of 74 from 213 balls.
Captain Kane Williamson contributed 48 in a 68-run partnership with Latham, before being caught behind off the bowling of Gunathilaka.
Starting the day on 88/4 with Angelo Mathews (27) and Roshen Silva (15) at the crease, Sri Lanka were only able to add a further 16 runs as Boult took six wickets for four runs in the space of 15 balls to dismiss the tourists for 104, inside 40 minutes.
Boult's first two wickets were caught by Tim Southee at third slip, with the remaining four being leg before wicket (lbw).
The 29-year-old was on a hat-trick when he removed Dilruwan Perera and Suranga Lakmal lbw in successive deliveries. Dushmantha Chameera survived the hat-trick delivery off the first ball of Boult's next over, but fell on the following delivery.
Boult, who had gone wicketless yesterday, ended with 6/30, while Southee was 3/35. Colin de Grandhomme also took wicket.
Southee top-scored in New Zealand's innings with 68 of 65 balls.
The first test in Wellington ended last week in a damp draw after virtually all of the final day's play was washed out due to rain.
