Cricket: Blackcaps pace attack praised after win over Sri Lanka

Athletic catches and a heap of wickets are what the Blackcaps bowling attack will be remembered for in their historic test series win over Sri Lanka at Hagley Oval.

The home side beat Sri Lanka to make it a record fourth-straight test series win for the first time ever.

Pace bowler Tim Southee is praising the efforts of the whole bowling unit.

"I think we saw over the series that a number a guys have stood up at a number of times, and that's a sign of a good team," he said.

"You're not relying on the same guys to do it over and over."

Over the two test series, the three quicks took 30 wickets - Tim Southee with 13, Trent Boult with 11, and Neil Wagner six.

Four of Wagner's six wickets came in the final innings of the series.

"It's been a strength of the bowling attack for a while, to share around the wickets," Southee said.

"We believed as a group that [Wagner] would come and play a massive role for us at some stage, and he did that."

Captain Kane Williamson said the three quicks were fantastic all series, but it was Wagner's dirty work he singled out.

"Wagner has a massive heart, he often bowls a number of overs when the surface isn't offering much," Williamson said.

"It was great to get the rewards yesterday for all the effort that he puts in. He was a really important factor in getting the breakthroughs."

The Blackcaps test side will now have a break until February 28, when they will host Bangladesh in a three test series.
