Cricket: Former Blackcap Nathan McCullum rubbishes false reports of his death

Former Blackcaps all-rounder Nathan McCullum has cleared the air over reports of his death, alerting fans that he is still alive and well.

Rumours circulated on social media on Saturday night the 38-year-old had died due to complications in hospital.

"Nathan Leslie McCullum (born September 1 1980) is a former New Zealand international cricketer, who represented New Zealand in Twenty20 international and One Day internationals," said a post from NZ Cricket FanHub.

"This evening his wife Vannessa announced that he had passed away. RIP NATHAN."

But McCullum himself says those reports were very much false, posting a selfie online.

"I am alive and kicking more than ever before," he said on Twitter. "Not sure where this news has come from but this is fake. Love you all."

McCullum retired from international cricket in 2016 having played 84 ODIs and 63 T20s for New Zealand. He is the older brother of former Blackcaps captain Brendon McCullum.

Brendon, who plays in T20 leagues around the world, said his "heart broke" when he heard the news that somebody falsely reported about his brother's death.

"Tonight someone decided, via social media to release that my brother passed away! I'm on a flight back to NZ and my heart broke! None of it is true! Whoever put this out there, I'll find you! Somewhere, somehow."
