EPL: Xherdan Shaqiri sends Liverpool top with double against Manchester United

Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench to fire Liverpool to victory over Manchester United, taking them back to the top of the English Premier League standings on Monday (NZT).

Shaqiri came on in the 70th minute with the scores locked 1-1 at Anfield and his impact was immediately felt. He scored three minutes later and had a second in the 80th minute.

The win means Liverpool remain unbeaten after 17 matches, while also leapfrogging Manchester City to sit a point clear on the standings.

United remain in sixth place, 19 points behind Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's side took the lead on 24 minutes, when Fabinho found the back of the net, but United responded nine minutes later, when Alisson was unable to hold Romelu Lukaku’s cross and Jesse Lingard pounced on the rebound.

Liverpool dominated with 36 attempts on goal, compared to United's six, but the match turned on the introduction of Swiss Shaqiri with 20 minutes left.

Eventually, the hosts regained the lead, as Shaqiri's shot deflected off Ashley Young and in off the crossbar.

With 10 minutes remaining, he was again on hand to score from 18 metres out, via another deflection.

Liverpool boss Klopp was "over the moon" with his sides performance.

"The way the boys played tonight was outstanding," he said on Sky Sports UK.

"We saw the line-up of United and their quality - how organised they were and they fight from the back. The plan was to be brave and chip the ball behind the lines.

"The first goal was if you could have drawn it would have been the goal - it's so deserved. Top, top first-class team."

Earlier, Charlie Austin's 85th-minute goal gave Southampton a shock 3-2 win over Arsenal, whose first defeat in 23 games saw them lose ground on fourth-placed Chelsea.

Southampton moved out of the bottom three, above Chris Wood's Burnley into 17th place, while Arsenal remained fifth in the table.

Chelsea also beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1, with goals from Eden Hazard and Pedro, while Solly March scored the Seagulls' lone goal.
