Football: U17 World Cup star Grace Wisnewski hopes NZ's success 'inspires young kids'

New Zealand have finished with their highest placing in a World Cup after the women's U17 side took home the bronze medal in Uruguay.

The team beat Canada 2-1 in the third-fourth playoff match thanks to a double from striker Grace Wisnewski.

The Hamilton-based player scored after just 15 seconds to give the Kiwis the perfect start to the match.

The 16-year-old spoke to Andrew Gourdie and Jim Kayes on RadioLIVE's Sunday Sport.

"We are all pretty stoked - it's unbelievable, and there are no words to describe how we feel," Wisnewski said.

"We are so happy, so proud to make history for New Zealand. Our goal was to be able to get out of our pool, and to come home with a bronze medal means so much to us."

The U17 side created history in Uruguay, and Wisnewski hopes their achievements can inspire girls all around the country.

"We just want to keep inspiring young kids - hopefully we can keep improving for future tournaments. We've done it so there's no reason why the future generations can't."

"Who would have thought?" said coach Leon Birnie following the game. "We came over here and we had a dream to get out of the group

"We made history by doing that and then got into the semi-finals and created more history, and now we have just got a bronze medal in a World Cup. How good are these players?

"The first half we were really good and the second half was just pure determination and hanging in there to get that medal."
