Chicago police are investigating an incident at an NHL hockey match, after Blackhawks mascot Tommy Hawk was filmed fighting with a spectator on Saturday (NZ time).

After the Blackhawks' 4-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets at the United Centre in Chicago, a disgruntled fan reportedly punched the mascot in the head, before he responded by body slamming the fan.

The police were notified of the altercation, but the fan fled before police arrived. The attacker was described as aged between 18- 20, about 1.65m tall and weighing 72kg.

The Chicago Sun-Times posted a video of the incident, which doesn't show the initial encounter, but does include Tommy Hawk body-slamming, then punching the man.

"We are gathering the facts and will have no further comment at this time, pending our investigation," a team spokesperson told the Sun-Times.

The Blackhawks have had a year to forget, as they sit last in their division and have the second-fewest points in the 31-team league.
