Warriors recruitment manager thinks 15 is too young to recruit players

A new generation of sevens talent is on show at the Condor Sevens this weekend.

It's a chance for high school students to showcase their skills to scouts from both rugby and league.

But one of the most widely respected recruitment managers in the NRL is wanting to raise the age scouts can sign talent.

Roosters, Warriors, Knights, and Crusaders scouts were all there and their search for talent getting younger and younger

"It's not pleasant at different stages when you have to recruit so young but it's something you have to do," said Warrior's recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan.

Unlike rugby, NRL clubs can contract kids as young as 15 years old

The reason why we do that is we want to pull them into systems earlier and develop them earlier Roosters scout Fita Hala said.

But is 15 too young?

The person responsible for bringing Roger Tuivasa Shek to Sydney thinks it is.

"If the rules would change in Rugby League where they'd move to 17 probably think it would be a good thing for the game," O'Sullivan said.

Uprooting players at such a young age come with risks

Hamilton Boy's High School first fifteen coach Nigel Hotham said.

"I've seen situations where whole families have up and moved to Australia on the promise that he's going to make it and he doesn't

"Then what happens to his family? So there are lots of things you need to be wary of."

O'Sullivan thinks that can be prevented if the NRL restricts clubs from signing Kiwi players until they're 17.

"They've all got hopes and dreams but sometimes a bit more realism might be a bit more practical."

But while the rules stay as they are the Warriors run the risk of falling behind.
