Former All Blacks prop Carl Hayman has been suspended from his coaching role at French club Pau following an altercation with players in the squad

French publication L'Equipe says Hayman was not on the sidelines for Pau's 40-23 win over the Bordeaux Begles as he's suspended for his role in an incident that took place earlier in the week at a New Year's Eve party last Monday.

Pau confirmed on Sunday morning (NZ time) that the 39-year-old will be replaced as forwards coach by former Brive coach Nicolas Godignon, but will remain at the club in a different role until his contract expires in June.

The 45-test All Black has been in charge of the Top 14 side's forwards since 2016 after winning the French title and three European Cups as a player with Toulon.

Fellow New Zealanders Simon Mannix, Conrad Smith and Paul Tito are also part of the Pau coaching staff.

There are seven Kiwi players in the squad, including former All Blacks Jamie Mackintosh, Colin Slade, Benson Stanley, Frank Halai and Tom Taylor.

The win over Bordeaux was Pau's first win since October.
