Horse racing: Debbie Kepitis on the hunt for the next Winx in Karaka

If you are hoping to unearth the next Winx in Karaka Sales this week, you could do worse than keeping an eye on the people who spotted the filly that grew up to be a champion.

Take Debbie Kepitis as one such example.

For the last six years, she's been on a ride she could never have dreamed of as one of three owners of the best horse in the world.

Four time Cox Plate champion and winner of 29 races in a row, Winx was purchased at the Magic Millions sale on the Gold Coast in 2013 for $230,000.

"She's won 22 million," Kepitis confirms to Newshub. "Now I try to say that quickly because that's really not what it's all about with her."

Winx co-owner Peter Tighe is also on the hunt for the next champion at Karaka this week with the help of Guy Mulcaster - the Kiwi bloodstock agent credited as the man who found Winx.

And she's certainly delivered for her owners with the help of Kiwi trainer Chris Waller, who's currently preparing Winx for a four-race campaign culminating with April's Queen Elizabeth Stakes, which is expected to be her last ever race.

"It's just this magic carpet that just keeps flying us and we are enjoying every minute of it," said Kepitis.
