Biography

Currently ranked fourth in both test and ODI batting, but was once number one in tests, where he captains England.

Root was named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2014 and was once described by NZ legend Martin Crowe as one of the 'Fab Four' of cricket, along with Kane Williamson, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli.

Earlier this year, he made a stand against West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, who apparently used a homophobic insult against his rival. Root told him: "Don't use it as an insult, there's doing wrong with being gay."

Root went on to score a century.
