Golf: American Ryan Moore's ace highlights Players Championship opening round

American golfer Ryan Moore has highlighted the opening day of the Players Championship, acing the game's most infamous hole at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Playing the back nine first, Moore arrived at the 17th tee at two-under par and played a wedge to the intimidating 121-yard island green, hitting the bottom of the flag and landing in the hole.

The eagle was just the ninth ace at that hole in the tournament's 45-year history.

Moore also made five birdies and two bogies to eventually card a five-under 67, good for a three-way share of fifth place.

Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and American Keegan Bradley lead the field with seven-under 65s, with Korean Byeong Hun An and American Brian Harman a stroke back.

American star Tiger Woods is tied for 35th with a two-under-par 70, while Kiwi Danny Lee has plenty of work to do if he hopes to make the cut on Saturday, languishing in a tie for 118th at three over.
