Super Rugby 2019: Two punters jump clear of Newshub tipping comp

Check out the video above, as Ross Karl and Ollie Ritchie break down week five.

The first dagger has been thrown in the Newshub Super Rugby tipping comp.

Week four saw our first perfect weekend, with both Ross Karl and Ollie Ritchie picking winners and margins across all three games.

Those five extra bonus points have seen a seismic shift on the ladder, with Karl and Ritchie pulling clear of previous front-runner Andrew Gourdie.

Last week's key result saw the Hurricanes edge the Highlanders. Three of our punters picked that close margin, leaving them in a great spot for maximum points.

The Crusaders' mauling of the Chiefs was inevitable, so it all came down to the Blues and Sunwolves. Ritchie and Karl had the Blues 12-under, while John Day bullishly predicted 13-plus.

On reflection, that probably should read 'foolishly', as the Blues couldn't get the job done and Day missed out on seven points that would have seen him top the comp.

Those points were gleefully accepted by Karl and Ritchie, much to the chagrin of the rest of the punters. I'd share some of the What's App group chat, but I'd probably be fired.

Remarkably, all five tippers went 100 percent in the winner's column last week - the first time that has happened this year.

Week five sees just the two New Zealand derbies, with the Chiefs hosting the Hurricanes and the Crusaders travelling south to take on the Highlanders.

This is another intriguing week, with a real chance at scoring big points, meaning there could be some movement up and down the ladder.

Tellingly, Ritchie and Karl have differing opinions on how much the Hurricanes will beat the Chiefs by, so the result of that match will have huge implications on the rest of the weekend.

The rules are simple:

Pick the winner and margin of any Super Rugby game involving a New Zealand franchise, with points awarded in the following manner:

Pick the winner and margin (13-plus or 12-under) = three points.

Pick the winner only = one point.

Pick all results correctly including margin: five bonus points.

Super Rugby week five:

Chiefs vs Hurricanes and Highlanders vs Crusaders.

*Margin is based on the classic 12-under or 13-plus format.
