A-League: Apostolos Stamatelopoulos banned two weeks for tackle against Wellington Phoenix

The A-League match review panel has slapped a two-match ban on Adelaide United's rising star Apostolos Stamatelopoulos for his dangerous challenge on Wellington Phoenix midfielder Mandi on Sunday.

The 19-year-old was sent off, after he sensationally lunged at Mandi with a two-footed challenge from a kick-off resulting from one of his two goals in the Reds' 3-1 win.

The match review panel "determined that Stamatelopoulos committed the offence of 'serious foul play'... the minimum sanction for the offence is one match. The MRP proposed a sanction of two matches, being the minimum sanction for the offence, plus one additional match".

The suspension means Stamatelopoulos will miss the upcoming Hindmarsh Stadium visits of Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory.

The Western United-bound striker, who has only been booked once in 14 A-League matches, has until midday Tuesday to appeal the sanction.
