Basketball: Amiee Book following in father Ed's proud basketball footsteps

The Tall Ferns have begun their preparations for next year's Olympic Games with 18 players assembling in Auckland this week to take part in a high-performance selection camp.

It's a chance for players to put their hands up to wear the Fern in the future, but for Aimee Book, it's a chance to write another chapter in her family's proud basketball history.

The past year's been a page-turner for Book. She's just completed her first year of NCAA division one basketball which led to a first call-up to the national squad.

"It's been a goal of mine growing up so just getting the opportunity now is really exciting for me," Book told Newshub.

It's not only exciting for Aimee but her parents as well.

They both played ball for New Zealand with her father Ed the more recognisable figure having played a significant part in the Tall Blacks semi-final World Championships run in 2o02.

"It's been nice to see something that I've got so much out of in my life, follow in my footsteps," Ed Book said.

Amiee's not the only one taking a leaf out of their parent's book.

She's one of three daughters of former NZ Basketballers in the squad while Ella Fotu is the sister of current Tall Blacks, Isaac and Dan.

The next wave of talent is set to play an important role moving forward according to t coach Guy Molloy.

"There have been very distinguished senior players that have represented the Tall Ferns and some of those players know they're probably getting near the ends of their campaigns," he told Newshub.

Squad depth becomes even more vital now New Zealand qualify through the Asia region.

The men used over 40 players during their qualification campaign and Molloy thinks the women's team will use a similar number

It means Aimee Book could be following in her father's footsteps sooner rather than later

"Coming back getting the experience and then maybe getting the international experience I think it's a good learning curve for me," she said.

For now though - Aimee's taking it one shot at a time.
