Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko has put together a strong first round to sit in a tie for sixth at the ANA Inspiration in California.

Ko carded a first-round 70, two shots off the lead at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

The 21-year-old finished eighth and 13th in her first two tournaments of the year, and is searching for her first win in 12 months.

Ko birdied the final hole to sign for a two-under round that saw her make three birdies and a lone bogey on the seventh hole.

Ko is chasing her first Major win since the 2016 edition of this tournament.

The Kiwi number one will tee off for her second round at 9:19am Saturday (NZT) alongside American Lexi Thompson, who is one shot ahead of Ko at three under.
