Newshub Super Rugby tipping competition, week nine

Upstart Ollie Ritchie has reaped the benefits of one tiny slip-up to sweep past Ross Karl at the head of the Newshub Super Rugby tipping competition.

You may recall, Karl went all-in on the Blues last week, picking them 13-and-over against the Waratahs - the only dissenting voice across the three NZ franchise fixtures.

And he looked like a winner after 17 minutes, when the Aucklanders went 17 points up, but the Aussies came back to restrict the winning margin to just three points.

No bonus points for Karl, bragging rights to Ritchie.

If nothing else, the outcome showed how quickly tables can turn in this contest on the slightest miscalculation.

The lead won't change this week - Ritchie, Karl and sports presenter Andrew Gourdie have made identical picks across the only two games in question.

But rugby guru John Day and rookie Kristina Eddy, currently trailing behind, can close things up, if the Chiefs manage a narrow win over the Blues in Saturday's northern derby.

The rules are simple:

Pick the winner and margin of any Super Rugby game involving a New Zealand franchise, with points awarded in the following manner:

Pick the winner and margin (13-plus or 12-under) = three points.

Pick the winner only = one point.

Pick all results correctly including margin: five bonus points.

Super Rugby week nine:

Crusaders vs Highlanders, Chiefs vs Blues

*Margin is based on the classic 12-under or 13-plus format.
