The Wellington Phoenix are likely to be on the hunt for a new No.1 next season, and a leading candidate has emerged.

Current goalkeeper Filip Kurto has been heavily linked with a move to expansion club Western United, potentially under the guidance of departed boss Mark Rudan.

Kurto was the best stopper in the A-League regular season, recording a competition-high 95 saves.

His probable departure leaves a huge void for new coach Ufuk Talay to fill, but All Whites goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic would be a perfect fit.

The 27-year-old has been released by club Bristol City in the English Championship and is on the hunt for a new employer.

Marinovic's stay in England wasn't a pleasant one – the Kiwi dropped after one appearance following a sketchy display against Ipswich Town.

But his international experience could prove valuable for the A-League club, with just young Oliver Sail the only option if Kurto departs.

Marinovic has 24 All Whites caps, starring in New Zealand's unsuccessful World Cup qualifying tie against Peru in 2017.
