Biography:

Du Plessis is the captain of South Africa across all formats, which says plenty about his importance to the Proteas' World Cup campaign.

Signs of his quality as a batsman came early in his career, as he scored a hundred in his test debut against Australia in 2012.

His breakout year came in 2016 against the touring Australians, when he took over the captaincy for the injured AB de Villiers, when he became the first player score centuries in all three formats of cricket at a single venue in Johannesburg.

Du Plessis' calm demeanour under pressure, consistency, and wealth of experience will be key to the South African cause.

He's currently the sixth-placed ODI batsman on the ICC's world rankings.
