Football: Des Buckingham predicts New Zealand will continue dominant form at Under-20 World Cup

New Zealand's U20 coach Des Buckingham promises there is more to come from his side, after a record 5-0 win over Honduras at the World Cup in Poland.

The result was their largest-ever winning margin at a World Cup tournament and Buckingham feels it sets his side up nicely for the rest of their campaign.

In front of 5000 fans at Lublin Stadium on Saturday (NZT), an early own goal from Honduras defender Darwin Diego and a brace from Wellington Phoenix striker Ben Waine put the Kiwis up 3-0 at the break, before second-half strikes from Sarpreet Singh and Matt Conroy sealed the win.

They now sit atop Group C, with games against Norway on Tuesday and Uruguay on Friday to come.

"It was a pleasing performance," Buckingham told Newshub. "The players continued on from our warm-up win against Mexico and got the result they deserved.

"The result is satisfying, but what is more pleasing is the performance. They played with freedom and enjoyment throughout the 90 minutes, and showed what they're capable of.

"There was good free-flowing football. It was a pleasure to watch and the players found it enjoyable to play in also."

In their next match, New Zealand face an unfamiliar prospect in Norway - a team competing in their third U20 World Cup and their first since 1993.

Norway qualified for the World Cup, after beating defending champions England in a European play-off last year.

Buckingham was watching their opening World Cup match against Uruguay, which the South American nation won 3-1, as he spoke to Newshub.

"I'm watching them at the restaurant right now," he said.

"We've watched about six of the games they played during the Europa qualification. We will go through everything we need too and our players' attention has already turned to Norway.

"The team travels to Lodz tomorrow and will have two training sessions before that match."

Even though New Zealand won their opening match 5-0, Buckingham says he's willing to make changes to ensure his team feels rested.

"We had 10 players who didn't play tonight and I have no issue starting any of them against Norway."

A win would seal New Zealand's progression, while a draw would put them in a strong position to reach the next round.
