Rugby: New era dawns for Black Ferns under Les Elder

A new Black Ferns era begins on Sunday with a match against the NZ Barbarians.

Not only will it be new skipper Les Elder's first game in charge, but also a chance for 10 uncapped players to impress coach Glenn Moore.

The guard of honour at training signalled a bit of a changing of the guard.

For the first time in four years, the Black Ferns will have someone different leading them, with Elder taking charge after Fiao'o Fa'amausili's retirement.

But Fa'amusili is one of four players who retired last year - a void that could've been tough to replace, if Moore didn't have a plan ready.

"We've been conscious of that for the last four years, so we're developing the next level underneath," says Moore.

They're doing that through a series of camps involving a wider pool of players and exposing them to the Black Fern's systems and structures.

This camp is the fifth this year with 55 players involved.

"I guess that helps create that depth and gives girls more exposure to that level," says Elder.

Moore agrees: "The transition of these players should be reasonably seamless."

Moore will see if that's the case, when the Ferns play their first match of the year against the Barbarians.

It's a side full of former Ferns and old teammates, but the rookies have plenty to prove.

"On the field, you know you love to smash your mates and then off the field, you're just as good a mates as on the field," says Arihana Marino-Tauhinu.

There will be no love lost, with only 30 players making next month's four-test tour to the United States.
