Sevens: Black Ferns on track to defend Canada title

The Black Ferns Sevens remain on track to defend their Canada Sevens title in Langford after going through pool play unbeaten on Sunday (NZ time).

The New Zealand women dominated their opening two matches against Russia (26-7) and China (45-0) before being pushed against England (12-10) to top their pool in the British Columbia province.

England opened the scoring through Ellie Kidunne before Alena Saili hit back for the Blacks Ferns to tie things up at 5-5 at the break.

England regained the lead with Holly Aitchison scoring to make the score 10-5.

New Zealand threw everything at England and eventually captain Sarah Hirini scored to level things up before Tyla Nathan-Wong kicked what would be the match-winning conversion.

Against Russia, Michaela Blyde scored a brace, with Kelly Brazier and Niall Williams also scoring tries in the match.

The trio that scored against Russia all crossed the line against China, with Ruby Tui, Dhys Faleafaga, Cheyelle Robins-Reti, and Terina Te Tamaki contributing in the romp.

New Zealand will play their cup quarter-final against Spain at 4:18am on Monday morning.

The Langford Sevens have been played since 2015, with New Zealand winning the title three times, including the last two.
