Super Rugby 2019: Blues and Bulls play out draw at Eden Park

Harry Plummer has missed a chance to beat the Bulls and keep his sides playoff hopes alive, instead, he missed and they had to settle for a 22-22 draw.

The Blues won a penalty with seconds left in the match, they opted for a shot at goal to win the match rather than kick for touch and gain field position.

The 20-year-old stepped up, took a few breaths then kicked the ball and it flew to the right-hand side of the uprights - meaning his side would miss the playoffs.

The game started out in horrible conditions with the rain falling at Eden Park.

The hosts started out with intent but struggled to hold onto the ball in the wet conditions, gifting possession to the Bulls - they opened the scoring through a penalty.

The visitors hit back thanks to the boots of Harry Plummer to level the scores at 3-3.

A mistake from Jonathan Ruru saw the Bulls get a lineout and pounce to score the opener through flanker Hanro Liebenberg.

The Blues managed to keep the ball from the kick-off and worked their way forward thanks to some great plays and kicking from TJ Faiane, from there Akira Ioane went close to scoring before Ofa Tu'ungafasi crossed the line to take the Blues out to 10-8.

The two sides came out to different conditions in the second half, the weather clearing up.

The hosts responded immediately as they were willing to throw the ball around and play some running rugby - it worked as Scott Scrafton scored after a great run from James Parsons down the right wing.

Winger Cornal Hendricks scored the try of the match, beating Tom Robinson on the outside before putting a grubber through into the corner - he used his pace to gather the ball and score to level the scores at 15 - 15.

The quality of rugby increased from both sides as the weather cleared, with the Blues scoring again off the back of a scrum. Akira Ioane was too powerful as he scored in the 63rd minute.

But the Blues couldn't extend their lead, the visitors hitting back with just five minutes to go - first five Manie Libbok slicing through the defence to level the scores at 22-22.

The Blues worked the ball down the field and won a penalty, Patrick Tuipulotu pointed to the posts and it was Plummer who stepped up to have the chance to win the match, but when his kick slid past the post so did the Blues chance of making the playoffs.
