Super Rugby 2019: Blues break 15-game winless drought against Chiefs

The Blues have broken eight-year, 15 game drought against the Chiefs at Eden Park.

Not since 2011 has the Auckland based side tasted victory against the Chiefs, but a relatively clinical performance proved too much for the visitors.

Despite handing errors in the teens, the Blues were rarely troubled as the Chiefs struggled to get out of their own half for the first hour.

However, a Mitch Karpick try against the run of play after 17 minutes had the Blues on the back foot.

Reminiscent of last weekend against the Hurricanes, the Blues dominated the first quarter with ball in hand but a Chiefs breakout, through Angus To'avao and Etene Nanai-Seturo created panic in the Blues defence.

Rieko Ioane popped a desperation pass on his own line and Karpick pounced to score the opening try.

But the impressive Harry Plummer got the Blues back in the contest on the half-hour mark, finishing off a smart set-piece play for his die to crash over in the corner.

The Chiefs hit straight back through a Marty McKenzie try but a Melani Nanai try with three minutes on the clock gave the Blues a lead they would never give up.

The Chiefs will point to a controversial moment after 60 minutes when All Blacks prop Ofa Tu'ungafasi crossed the line from a great lineout drive. Tu'ungafasi appeared to lose the ball forward into a Chiefs player but both the referee and TMO were happy he had regained possession before contact.

The Chiefs went close on multiple occasions in the final quarter but Same Cane and Pita Gus Sowakula were guilty of crucial handling errors close to the line which let the Blues off the hook.

Gerrard Cowley-Tuioti's try in added-on time extended the lead to 15-points, giving the Blues a bonus point which could prove crucial at the end of the season.

The win lifts the Blues to 10th place, just one point outside the playoffs with a game in hand on most of the teams above them'

The Chiefs appear in desperation mode needing to win their remaining games and hope for a few slip-ups on the way.

The Blues travel to Canterbury for a crunch clash with the Crusaders next week while the Chiefs host the Reds.
