Super Rugby 2019: Newshub tipping comp ponders curious case of Blues

Safe to say, the Blues have proved a major stumbling block to Newshub Super Rugby tipsters this season.

"One thing I've learned this season is never to pick against the Blues," states form picker Kristina Eddy, who has gone against them this week.

"One thing I've learned this season is never to pick WITH the Blues," counters Newshub rugby editor Ross Karl, who originally picked with them, but made a late change, even as the graphic was being created.

What's that saying about repeating past mistakes?

With four NZ games on offer, this round looms as pivotal for a tightly bunched field.

A month ago, Eddy languished at the foot of the table, fully 19 points behind leader Karl. She was the big mover last week - the only one to successfully forecast the Hurricanes' big win over the Chiefs.

Now, she's just three points off the pace and has handed the wooden spoon to much-hyped Newshub sports presenter Andrew Gourdie.

Yet clearly, no-one can quite figure out which approach to take with the Blues.

This week, everyone agrees the Crusaders, Hurricanes and Highlanders will defeat the Sharks, Rebels and Chiefs respectively, although the margins are up for debate.

But our experts are split down the middle - Karl literally, it seems - over the Blues' visit to the Australian capital to take on the Brumbies.

Once again, the Blues will make or break someone this week.

The rules are simple:

Pick the winner and margin of any Super Rugby game involving a New Zealand franchise, with points awarded in the following manner:

Pick the winner and margin (13-plus or 12-under) = three points.

Pick the winner only = one point.

Pick all results correctly including margin: five bonus points.

Super Rugby week 12:

Crusaders v Sharks, Hurricanes v Rebels, Highlanders v Chiefs, Blues v Brumbies

*Margin is based on the classic 12-under or 13-plus format.
