Wrestling: Former WWE diva Ashley Massaro dies

Former WWE star Ashley Massaro has died in New York, aged 39.

Massaro burst onto the scene with victory at the pro wrestling promotion's 2005 Raw Diva Search, earning a US$250,000 one-year contract.

During her term with WWE, she also appeared on Survivor: China reality TV show, where she was voted out in the second week.

Massaro also feature on the April 2007 cover of Playboy magazine.

She cut ties with WWE in 2008, but returned to the ring two years ago with another company.

"We are saddened to learn of the tragic death of former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro," WWE said in a statement.

"She performed in WWE from 2005-2008 and was beloved by her fellow Superstars and fans around the world. WWE offers its condolences to Ashley's family and friends."

TMZ reports her death was "non-criminal". Massaro was training for another comeback this year.
