The Wellington Phoenix have signed experienced Australian defender Luke DeVere to fill the void left by Andrew Durante.

The 29-year-old, who has played 110 A-League games across two stints for Brisbane Roar, has signed for the Phoenix on a one-year deal.

Along with his two spells in the A-League, DeVere has also played 78 games with K-League club Gyeongnam FC and one international appearance for Australia against Germany in 2015.

DeVere struggled for game-time at the Roar last season and he's looking forward to his new opportunity in Wellington.

"This new challenge in Wellington represents a really exciting opportunity for me," DeVere said.

"It's easy to continue playing in an environment you feel comfortable in, but I feel that I always rise to a new challenge and I'm looking forward to beginning this journey in Wellington."

New Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay feels DeVere still has plenty to offer in the A-League.

"Luke is a highly experienced defender in this competition, so his knowledge and attitude will be crucial, as we look to progress on from next season," Talay said.

"At only 29, Luke is one of the most accomplished centre-backs in the league will no doubt be a huge asset here in Wellington."

DeVere will likely partner Steven Taylor at centre-back, after the departure of Durante, who is set to sign with Western United, who are coached by former Phoenix boss Mark Rudan.

DeVere is the fourth player so far signed by new Talay, joining All Whites goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, defender Walter Scott and winger Jaushua Sotirio.
