Cricket World Cup 2019: Blackcaps fined for slow over rate in West Indies win

Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson risks suspended at the Cricket World Cup, after New Zealand were fined for a slow over rate in their five-run win over the West Indies on Sunday (NZT).

International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee David Boon imposed the fine, after Williamson's side was ruled to be one over short of its target, after time allowances were taken into consideration.

Williamson pleaded guilty and was fined 20 percent of his match fee, while his teammates were handed 10 percent fines in accordance with article 2.22 of the ICC's Code of Conduct.

Williamson pleaded guilty to the offence after the match and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

Now the Blackcaps will have to be more time cautious, because if they commit another minor over rate offence during another 50-over match with Williamson at the helm, he will receive a one-game suspension.

The win over the West Indies helped the Blackcaps move one step closer to securing a spot in the World Cup semi-finals.

They face Pakistan in their next match at Edgbaston on Wednesday.
