Golf: Crazy video shows lightning striking tree at US Open

There were some wild and scary scenes during the second round of the US Women's Open in Charleston on Saturday (NZ time) when lightning struck a tree near the clubhouse.

Second round play had been suspended due to storms in the area at 4:33pm (local time), when the bolt struck the tree between the 18th fairway and the 11th green, almost splitting the oak in half.

No one was injured according to the United States Golf Association and play resumed at 6:45pm once the storms had cleared.

When the course was reopened, security personnel surrounded the tree and directed fans to steer clear.

Japanese golfer Mamiko Higais is currently tied for the lead at six-under par, with New Zealand's Lydia Ko tied for 23rd at even par.

However, due to bad light, play was stopped again at 8:24pm with 45 golfers yet to complete their rounds due to the earlier delay.
