The Blacks Ferns Sevens have all but secured the women's World Rugby Sevens series title after cruising into the quarter-finals at the Biarritz Sevens in France.

New Zealand went unbeaten on day one of the event after beating Scotland 44-7, Russia 31-0 and England 27-24 to top their pool, and will meet China in the quarter-finals.

A win against China will see the Black Ferns crowned 2018-19 World Series champions.

New Zealand captain Sarah Hirini described the day's work as "very pleasing".

"We obviously had some pretty good wins and then also got tested in a couple of areas, which I thought was awesome, because it means that we've still got a lot to work on for day two and we really want to come out firing for that quarter-final."

The Black Ferns Sevens are seeking their fifth title of the current season, having won the events in the US, Dubai, Australia, and Canada. Their only blemish came in Japan when they lost in the quarter-finals.

Their match against China takes place at 10:06pm.
