Super Rugby 2019: Crunch time for New Zealand franchises as playoff window closes

It's crunch time in Super Rugby, with just two weeks remaining.

The race for the playoffs is as close as any season in memory, with just the Crusaders and Hurricanes guaranteed a spot in the knockout stages.

And mathematically, every New Zealand franchise can still qualify, although the Chiefs would need a minor miracle.

They have the bye this week and a could be out of contention, if results don't go their way.

The Highlanders open up the action on Friday night, hosting the Bulls. Both sides are desperate for a win, especially the home side, with a loss ruling them out of the running.

The Blues take on the Reds in Brisbane, knowing they require 10 points from their final two games to have any hope of playing in two week's time.

A bonus-point win would lift them above the Chiefs and, potentially, the Highlanders, but more importantly, if results go their way, they could scrape back into the eighth and final playoff spot with a week to play.

The Crusaders hope to secure top spot and earn home-field advantage for the remainder of the season.

They need just two points to fend of the challenge of the Jaguares and Hurricanes, and given they are playing at home, they will be heavy favourites against the Rebels.

But the Melbourne club won't lack for motivation either, as they try to seperate themselves from the chasing pack for the final four playoff spots.

Finally this week, the Hurricanes play the Lions in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A win would guarantee John Plumtree's side fourth place and a home playoff in two weeks, but a loss opens the door for the likes of the Lions, Rebels and Bulls.
