A-League: Wellington Phoenix future secured under Football Federation Australia agreement

The Wellington Phoenix's future seems assured in the A-League, after Football Federation Australia (FFA) agreed in principle to let the clubs take control of the competition.

FFA made the announcement on Monday, giving the clubs unimpeded control of all commercial rights and forming a body to extract maximum value out of the game.

Discussions over the competition splitting from the FFA have been underway for some months, with several hurdles delaying an independent A-League.

But after a lengthy review by the New League Working Group (NLWG), the FFA have accepted the need for change, with long-form agreements expected to be finalised by August.

Phoenix general manager David Dome said the announcement was "extremely positive" for the club's future.

The Phoenix's licence was due to expire after next season, but with the support of all the other clubs, the Wellington outfit can now start planning longer term.

FFA chairman Chris Nikou believes proposed changes would not only benefit the A-League, but the entire football community, if implemented correctly.

"The recommendations of the NLWG serve to align and unite Australian football's interests like never before," Nikou said.
