Cricket World Cup 2019: Blackcaps play waiting game before semi-finals

Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson refuses to wave the white flag and believes his side will benefit from a few days' rest before a likely Cricket World Cup semi-final in Manchester next Tuesday.

The Blackcaps seem destined to clinch the fourth and final spot for the semi-finals, with a match-up against Australia or India on the cards.

That is despite New Zealand losing their last three games to Pakistan, Australia and England, after they went unbeaten through their first six outings.

There is only a slim chance Pakistan could leapfrog the Blackcaps into the semis, but New Zealand's superior run rate should see them qualify.

The Blackcaps won't know until Friday whether they'll progress, but once they do, they'll have four days to regroup and recharge ahead of a must-win clash.

"In some ways, it starts again now," said Williamson. "We have had a few losses recently, but if we get to the semi-final stage, anything can happen.

"We know that we haven't put out our best performance yet and we know when we do, it gives us the best chance of beating anybody, without a doubt.

"It is important for us to perhaps have a couple of days away. We sort of have a bit of a break now."

Williamson expects paceman quick Lockie Ferguson to be fit for the match, after missing the clash against England with a hamstring injury.

Ferguson is New Zealand's leading wicket-taker at the tournament, with 17 scalps in eight World Cup games.

He has taken the second-most wickets, behind Australian Mitchell Starc's 24.

"He should be fine," said Williamson. "It's a fairly minor injury, sort of a light hamstring thing, so he should be okay.

"We have a number of days between now and that game potentially."

"He's been outstanding throughout this whole tournament and a real point of difference for us. Coming in and bowling at 150, naturally, is a great weapon to have."
