Cycling: Frenchman Valentin Anouilh's crazy Tour de France leap

While Tour de France riders negotiated the 10th stage of the cycling classic, they were momentarily upstaged by a daredevil with his own agenda.

Somewhere on a mountain road between Saint Flour and Albi, French teen Valentin Anouilh performed a daring leap over the peleton in a stunt that has become as much a part of the tour as the yellow jersey.

Last year, Alexis Bosson performed the feat on the same stage.

"I am so happy about it," said Anouilh, 19. "You can't know what it's like to jump the Tour de France."

While most social media commenters praised the performance, some were disturbed at the potential for major injury - to the jumper and the riders below.

Others regarded it as an attempt by an upstart mountain-biker to steal the thunder from the roadies.

While most of the Tour field seemed oblivious to the aerobatics taking place above them, at least one noticed and sought confirmation of the act.

"Did anyone else see a mountain biker hit a 30ft drop over us in the Tour yesterday/" tweeted American Ben King. "Is there a video?

"Want to make sure I'm not hallucinating!"

After a rest day on Tuesday, the 21-stage journey resumes on Wednesday, headed for Toulouse.
