Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut has continued his dominance in competitive eating by winning his 12th title at the annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Chestnut chowed down 71 wieners and buns in 10 minutes, just three shy of the record he set last year.

The California native has now won four straight titles, with his only defeat coming in 2015 against Matt Stonie.

"I was trying to break the record and my competitors were trying to beat me," Chestnut said, after claiming the title.

"In the heat, the heat got in my way a little bit. I think I got zapped a little bit.

"About five minutes in, I slowed down way more than I ever hoped I would, but that's all right. I got the win, and now I get to drink liquid and go to sleep."

In the women's division, Miki Sudo, also the defending champion, clinched the Mustard Belt again with her sixth consecutive first-place finish, consuming 31 hot dogs.

The annual eat-off started in 1972, though the sponsor has long promoted the event with a theatrical backstory that places its start date in 1916.
