Kiwi IndyCar driver Scott Dixon has claimed his sixth podium finish in 11 races this season, with a second placing on the streets of Toronto.

Dixon, racing with an arm injury, finished behind Simon Pagenaud in Canada, after starting the race in second on the grid.

Frenchman Pagenaud led for 80 of the 85 laps and held a decent six-second gap between him and Dixon near the halfway stage.

But Dixon, a five-time IndyCar Series champion and three-time winner in Toronto, roared back and cut the gap to half a second with 18 laps to go.

The 38-year-old New Zealander didn't manage to pass Pagenaud, but he has closed the gap on series leader Joseph Newgarden on the points standings.

Heading into the race, Dixon was 94 points behind Newgarden, but after the American's fourth-placing, he now trails by 86 points, with six races left in the championship.

"We just didn't have the pace to get past Simon," Dixon said. "We are making up points at the right time, but ultimately we came up just short.

"All in all, a good day to get some points, but we need bigger hits than that."

The series now moves to Iowa next weekend.
