Netball: Silver Ferns' sponsors pool resources for $25,000 bonus for World Cup victory

The four primary sponsors of the Silver Ferns have banded together to ensure the recently crowned world champions will receive a bonus payment for their efforts in England.

SKY Sport and ANZ had earlier indicated they'd make a contribution in the wake of the public uproar regarding the lack of prize money on offer in contrast with the likes of the Blackcaps, who shared a $3 million payout for their second-placed finish at the Cricket World Cup.

The matter went as high as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who urged the Silver Ferns' sponsors to front up with a monetary reward for their World Cup exploits.

But both MYOB and Puma have now also come to the party to enable each player to be awarded a bonus of $25,000, Netball NZ has confirmed.

CEO Jennie Wyllie expressed her gratitude to the team's sponsors for the ability to give the victorious Ferns players a richly deserved financial reward.

“We are so thankful to our wonderful partners for both their ongoing support of the Silver Ferns and the sport," said Wyllie."And coming together to provide this financial boost in recognition of our world champions.

"Netball NZ works tirelessly to increase the financial resourcing of the game and our players which is not an easy task. Elite players continue to work relentlessly for their love of the game without expectations of high remuneration, but this is a huge step forward and we are very grateful to our partners, who we could not do this without."

Earlier on Thursday, Sky CEO said they were pleased to chip in to what he called a worthy cause.

"The passion and commitment of the team was evident to everyone who watched, and they did us all proud," said Stewart.

"We're really pleased to be able to show our support by contributing to a bonus payment for the team."
