Push to rename Basin Reserve 'Support Women's Sport Basin Reserve'

Plans are afoot to rename Wellington's Basin Reserve and one Wellington councillor is hoping it will happen.

Former Olympians Sarah Cowley Ross and Chantal Brunner, and several organisations are pushing for the name to be changed to 'Support Women's Sport Basin Reserve', RNZ reports.

Wellington City Councillor Fleur Fitzsimons, who's also a trustee of the cricket ground, told Newshub she thought the name would stick.

"There's already been some practice runs by some commentators to say 'returning to the Support Women's Sport Basin Reserve' and they seem to take to it very well."

She said the name would send a strong message about the capital's commitment to women's sport.

"If we change the name to Support Women's Sport Basin Reserve, we're really just sending a message across the world that Wellington is a place that values women's sport."

Wellington Mayor Justin Lester is among those backing the proposed name change.

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched for the project, attempting to raise $100,000 to buy the naming rights for the next two years.
