A-League: Steven Taylor confirmed as new Wellington Phoenix captain

Steven Taylor isn't shying away from the challenge of becoming just the third club captain in the history of the Wellington Phoenix.

The former Premier League defender replaces Andrew Durante, who wore the captain's armband for 11 seasons.

Taylor wants to make his mark as a leader before hanging up the boots.

He is one of just half a dozen returning players and feels comfortable stepping into the boots worn by long-time leader Durante.

"It's exciting more than anything for me," Taylor told Newshub. "Like I've always said, I never feel the pressure"

And he's in it for the long-haul, declaring he wants to stay in Wellington for the rest of his career.

I think that's the project for me now. I want to leave my legacy at this football club"

Part of that legacy is helping his team-mates follow in Sarpeet Singh's footsteps and play in Europe.

"Getting that kind of opportunity now is going to drive all the Kiwi boys and even the Aussie boys now to come here and want to establish yourself and get the opportunity to play overseas."
