Basketball: Australia Boomers v Team USA clash falls flat for Melbourne high-rollers

Disgruntled VIPs have taken to social media to protest about their seats at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium for the much-hyped exhibition match between the Australia Boomers and Team USA.

Fifty-thousand people packed out the AFL football stadium to watch some of the world's best take to the hardwood floor, with the Americans prevailing 102-88 - but it wasn't the game grabbing the most headlines.

Instead, those who paid the most to get close to the action weren't happy with their views of the match.

Some fans paid more than AU$1500 for their 'courtside' seating, but arrived at the makeshift basketball arena to find the court was raised three metres off the ground.

It didn't take long for fan fury to spread to social media.

Aussie film star Russell Crowe was among the disgruntled, after paying $1500 for what turned out to be a heavily obstructed view.

"If you weren't among the 50,000 there and you chose to watch it on TV at home, good decision," he tweeted.

Basketball Australia was already in hot water before this issue came to fruition, offering ticket refunds for misleading advertising. Some of the biggest names in basketball - including Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry - were expected to be make the trip with Team USA, but both teams have been hit by defections from NBA stars choosing to bypass the World Cup.

Basketball Australia has yet to comment on the seating debacle and Team USA cancelled their Friday media opportunities with no explanation given.

The teams are due to square up again at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
