Cricket: Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson under investigation for illegal bowling action

  • 20/08/2019

Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson has been reported for a suspect bowling action during the first test in Galle.

The ICC has announced that the match report from the Blackcaps' defeat cited concerns over Williamson and Sri Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya's techniques.

Both players will be required to undergo testing within 14 days from the reported date (August 18) but will be allowed to continue bowling until the results come through.

No more than a part-timer at the bowling crease, Williamson only bowled three overs of offspin during the six-wicket loss.

Coach Gary Stead believes his captain's arm at the point of release was what match officials had taken exception with.

"There were three or four balls that they look at that they thought may need more scrutinising from a bending of the elbow point of view," said Stead.

Williamson is due to return home following the second test for a pre-planned rest.

"He'll get re-tested - probably in Brisbane - and from there we'll know the process of how we either have to a) rectify his action or b) we carry on as it is."

It's the second time Williamson has found himself in such a predicament, having become the first New Zealand cricketer in history to be reported for an illegal action after a defeat to the West Indies in 2014.

He was cleared by testing and able to resume bowling five months later.

The second test against Sri Lanka starts Thursday in Colombo.
