Paceman Tim Southee will lead the Blackcaps in their Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka next month.

The swing bowlerwill take the helm again, after leading the side against the Sri Lankans on home soil back in January.

Regular captain Kane Williamson and quick Trent Boult don't feature in the squad, with both due to return to New Zealand for pre-planned rest after the two-match test series.

The group is a balanced blend of experience and emerging talent, with the likes of Ross Taylor, Martin Guptill and Ish Sodhi lining up with relative newcomers Tom Bruce, Scott Kuggelijn and Seth Rance.

Selector Gavin Larsen said the series represented the start of a new T20 cycle, with nine series scheduled for the side ahead of next October’s World Cup in Australia.

"The series in Sri Lanka will be a challenging one against a team who are tough to beat in their own conditions," said Larsen.

"Our T20 team has been pretty consistent over the past couple of years and we’re really happy with the power and versatility we have in this squad."

New Zealand currently sit sixth in the ICC's interntaional T20 rankings, two spots above Sri Lanka.

The first T20 of the series takes place September 1 at Pallekele International Stadium.
