Cycling: Kiwi world champion cyclist Laurence Pithie eyes Olympics

One of the rising stars of New Zealand is a relative novice, having only taken up the sport three years ago.

Christchurch teenager Laurence Pithie arrived home on Wednesday morning, fresh from claiming double gold at the junior world championships in Germany.

His rise up the cycling ranks is as surprising as his history on the bike.

Pithie's familiarity in his hometown is a far cry from what he enjoyed at last week's world champs.

"No one would have known me really," he told Newshub. "Apart from those in Australia that I raced against last year."

But he'll certainly be on their radars now, after winning gold in the gruelling omnium race, before he backed it up the next day in the Madison.

His success is all the more staggering considering how new he is to the sport.

"I started in cross country, but then I switched over fully in 2016. Cycling's been my passion since then, but it'd always like to go back to running."

But it won't be anytime soon. Pithie's age means he'll be free to defend his titles next year.

For now getting back to school is the priority, before he takes his next steps on what he hopes is the road to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
